Our spines are truly amazing structures. Over 100 joints allow for the spine’s incredible flexibility and range of motion. However, most of us rarely take the opportunity to enjoy our spine's potential. Take a moment to contemplate for example, on whether you ever take the time to stretch out your spine when you wake up in the morning. Try stretching one arm up and allow yourself to take a deep, powerful yawn. You'll notice how naturally those two actions occur together as the body almost vibrates into the stretch. This movement alone is such a healthy stretch for our spines, which we so often neglect as we hunch over our laptops, ipads or phones and I'm probably right in saying that most of us never take the time to wake up our spines in the morning. Observe a cat however, and you'll notice the dilligence with which she stretches her spine upon waking up and the suppleness with which she then moves.
Of course our spine moves in many ways; flexion, extension, rotation, lateral flexion and translation, as well as a combination of these, all of which are components of even the simplest movements such as walking and running. Therefore, keeping our spines healthy, strong, flexible and energized is invaluable.
